Christ the Redeemer is a monument of Jesus Christ in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Located at the top of the Corcovado Mountain, 709 meters above sea level. From its 38 meters, eight are in the pedestal. It opened at 19h 15min on 12 October, 1931, after nearly five years of work.
The construction of a religious monument on the site was first suggested in 1859 by the Vincentian father Pedro Maria Boss, the Princess Elizabeth. However, only returned to the idea effectively in 1921 when it initiated the preparations for the centenary celebrations of Independence.
The road that leads to the place that today is the Christ the Redeemer was built in 1824, Silvestre. Since the railroad was the first day (Cosme Velho-Paineiras) opened in 1884. The following year, 1885, the second sentence was completed, completing the connection with the summit. The railroad, which is 3800 meters long, was the first to be electrified in Brazil in 1906. The construction of Christ the Redeemer is still considered one of the great chapters of the Brazilian civil engineering. The owner of the project took a lifetime building it erected in reinforced concrete and lined with limestone, originating from the very peak of Corcovado.
