Germany discovers piece of 2 thousand years in honor of Emperor Augustus
German archaeologists revealed on Thursday (27) a horse's head of bronze and gold they believe is a vestige of a Roman statue of 2 thousand years.
A team of excavations at an ancient Roman town near Waldgirmes in central Germany, found the head at the foot of a rider on the 12th of August.
"This bronze sculpture is among the best pieces ever found in the area of the Roman Empire," Kuehne said Eva-Hoermann, Minister of State for Science in Hesse, at the announcement in Frankfurt.
Experts say that the statue dates from 3 or 4 BC, when the Roman station near Waldgirmes was established, and probably represents the Emperor Augustus. After defeating the Romans at the battle of Teutoburg in 9 AD, Germanic tribes destroyed the statue and buried the head, said archaeologists.
"Nowhere is there a discovery of this form or quality," said Kuehne, Hoermann. The reins of the horse is decorated with images of Mars, god of war, and the goddess Victoria.
